Leppävirta’s Moomin ice sculpture exhibition reopens bigger than ever

15.03.2023

The 5th Moomin ice sculpture exhibition with its ice castles and slides for kids is expanding again. The exhibition's main theme this season is "Moominvalley Turns Jungle", but featured are also several other favorite scenes from the original Tove Jansson's Moomin comics.

"We wanted to bring as many spectacular and well-known scenes as possible for the sculptors to bring to life, so the story isn’t chronological this time, even though the jungle plays a big role," says Esa Salmiheimo, CEO of Leppäkerttu Oy. "This year, also the lighting and sound will play even greater roles. In addition, we’ve received reinforcements to our team of sculptors from Lainio Snow Village in Kittilä, namely Tomi and Rami Kurtakko. In the past, cooperation has not been possible due to everyone’s schedules, but this time our exceptional opening time made it feasible, and it is great to get to see the most experienced pioneers of thematic ice sculpting in our cave. As usual, Anssi Kuosa is in charge of the management," Salmiheimo continues.

The activity park attached to the ice sculpture exhibition will have a large snow castle with vaults, climbing sites, and ice slides. The Moomin ice sculpture exhibition, which opens exceptionally on April 1st, has gathered 25000–35000 visitors in its previous years. The renovation of the cooling technology of the ski arena, which began in late 2022, postponed the opening of the exhibition to spring 2023, and therefore this season, which ends at the end of August, is only five months long.
